Sustainability and China’s affect on the rest of the world

Thread Newsletter – August Edition

We’re kicking off our first Thread newsletter, not about design, but rather focusing on an important topic, sustainability. Concerns around plastic consumption, offsetting CO2 production and developing sustainable food sources have been stories we’ve seen in increasing amounts.

Distributing food without plastic is a challenge globally, as of January 1 of this year, China banned imports of foreign waste within 24 categories. By end of year, there are plans to extend it to another 16 categories. This has set off alarms globally as countries like the UK scramble to find alternatives to send their annual 800 000 tonnes of plastic trash. Yet this doesn’t solve China’s own waste and plastic problem, where a growing contributor has been the booming online food delivery market estimated to grow to 241 billion yuan this year.

With this in mind, we did a little Thread Experiment. We challenged ourselves to go one week without plastic in an attempt to do a bit of good and be more self-aware. Take a look at how things fared!
